The gap between promotion and readiness

Most managers get promoted for being good at their previous job. The skills that got them there rarely match the skills they need next.

What we hear from employers

  • New team leaders struggle with difficult conversations and default to avoidance.
  • Middle managers spend 80% of their week firefighting instead of planning.
  • Performance reviews feel like a box-ticking exercise, not a development tool.
  • Staff turnover spikes in departments where the manager had no formal training.

What changes after our programmes

  • Managers hold structured one-to-ones within the first week back.
  • Delegation improves because participants practise it during the course, not just read about it.
  • Conflict gets addressed early. Participants leave with a scripted framework they can adapt.
  • Teams report clearer expectations and less confusion about priorities.

Our programmes

Each course runs as a standalone module or as part of a longer development pathway. Minimum group size is four; maximum is twelve.

First-time manager essentials (2 days)

Covers the transition from individual contributor to team leader. Participants work through real delegation briefs, practise giving feedback using recorded role-plays, and leave with a 90-day action plan tailored to their own team. We keep groups small so every person gets coached individually during exercises.

Performance and appraisal skills (1 day)

Designed for managers who already lead a team but find formal reviews unproductive. The morning focuses on setting objectives that actually drive behaviour. The afternoon is all practice: participants conduct a mock appraisal with an actor and receive video feedback they can review later.

Strategic time and priority management (1 day)

Not a generic productivity seminar. We audit each participant's actual calendar the week before and use that data in the session. Attendees identify their top three time drains, build a weekly planning template, and learn to say no to requests that sit outside their role's key results.

Difficult conversations and conflict resolution (1 day)

Participants arrive with a real scenario they are currently avoiding. By the end of the day they have rehearsed that conversation three times with increasing complexity. We use a four-step framework: name the issue, share the impact, ask for their perspective, agree the next step. Simple, but it takes practice to hold under pressure.

Coaching skills for managers (2 days)

Teaches a structured coaching model managers can use in 15-minute check-ins. Day one covers questioning technique and active listening. Day two puts it all together with live coaching triads where each person coaches, receives coaching, and observes. We follow up four weeks later with a group review call.

Remote and hybrid team leadership (half day)

Built specifically for managers whose teams split time between office and home. Covers asynchronous communication norms, running meetings that respect remote participants, and monitoring output without micromanaging. Delivered online so the medium matches the message.

How we work together

From first call to post-course follow-up, here is what to expect.

Discovery call

We spend 30 minutes understanding your team size, current challenges, and what success looks like. No slides, no pitch deck.

Tailored proposal

Within five working days you receive a programme outline, pricing, and suggested dates. We include pre-course questionnaires for your participants.

Delivery

Courses run at your premises or a venue we arrange. Groups of four to twelve. Every session mixes short input with extended practice.

Follow-up

Four weeks after the course, we run a 60-minute group call to review progress on action plans and troubleshoot anything that has stalled.

"We sent eight team leaders through the first-time manager programme. Three months later, our internal engagement survey scores for those teams had risen by 14 points. That is the fastest shift we have seen from any intervention."

Common questions

Yes. Most of our clients prefer on-site delivery because it reduces travel time for participants and lets us see the working environment first-hand. We bring all materials, including printed workbooks and any AV equipment we need. You just provide a room that fits the group comfortably.
Four is the minimum for interactive exercises to work well. Twelve is the cap so every participant gets individual attention. If you have more than twelve people, we split into two cohorts and run them on consecutive days.
Every participant receives a certificate of completion with the programme title, date, and learning hours. For the coaching skills course, we also provide a digital badge they can add to LinkedIn.
Three to four weeks is ideal. That gives us time to send pre-course questionnaires and tailor case studies. We have occasionally turned around a course in ten days when an urgent need arose, so call us even if your timeline is tight.
We start at 9:30 and finish by 16:30. The morning usually contains two input blocks of about 20 minutes each, separated by a practical exercise. After lunch we move into extended role-plays or case work. The last 30 minutes are always reserved for individual action planning.
The remote and hybrid team leadership module is designed for online delivery. Other programmes work best face-to-face because of the role-play and group coaching elements, but we can adapt the performance and appraisal course for a virtual format if geography makes in-person delivery impractical.
